Opium, Journal d'une Désintoxication, by Jean Cocteau

£5,500.00

COCTEAU, Jean. Opium. Journal d’une désintoxication. Illustré par l’Auteur. Paris, Libraire Stock, Delamain et Boutelleau, [1930].

First edition, n. 14 of 28 copies printed on Japon impèrial paper, most of which are no longer in private hands – an extraordinary testament to the physical and mental anguish experienced during withdrawal from an addictive substance.

Opium is a collection of notes and drawings which vividly document Cocteau’s rehabilitation from opium addiction. Written and illustrated by the author between 16 December 1928 and April 1929, while under treatment at a clinic in Saint-Cloud, Opium is addressed to ‘opium smokers, the sick, and those unknown friends found through books, who are the only excuse for writing’ (transl.).

Octavo, pp. 264, with 43 illustrations by the author (40 drawings and 3 collages); a very good copy, partly uncut, in the original white paper wrappers printed in black and gold (slight lean to spine, spine lightly foxed and creased).
