Les Reincarnations du Père Ubu by Ambroise Vollard

£300.00

Paris; Le Divan. 1st edition, 1925. 8to, soft cover. 237pp + table of subjects. Includes a reproduction of a portrait of the author by Georges Rouault by the frontispiece. One of 160 numbered copies, of which is is 87. Heavily annotated, perhaps by an individual associated with publishing the later edition.

Legendary art dealer Ambroise Vollard’s ‘reincarnation’ of his friend Alfred Jarry’s absurdist character Père Ubu. He wrote several short books on this theme, in which Ubu is trying to understand the absurdities of the war. This is the true first published in 1925 by Le Divan, though interestingly the book was re-produced in 1932 in a more luxurious edition by Vollard himself, with a much larger suite of etchings provided by Rouault. The present copy has been heavily annotated throughout, and the annotations appear to be editorial changes, perhaps for the 1932 edition published under the author’s own imprint.
