First English-language translation Georges Bataille’s erotic novella L’Histore de l’Oeil, very rare in this condition.
The first original edition of Histoire de l’œil was clandestinely published by Bataille in 1928, under the pseudonym ‘Lord Auch’. The novella recounts the sexual experiences of two adolescences and their increasing perversity. This first English translation is by the American author Austryn Wainhouse, who worked under the pseudonym ‘Audiart’. Maurice Girodias, the proprietor of the Olympia Press, chose the title of the translation himself, aiming to obscure any connection between this book and Bataille’s heavily prosecuted original work.
Small octavo, pp. 105, [5]; near fine in the original mustard stiff paper wrappers, printed in black and white (wrappers a little toned, corners and spine ends slightly bumped).
